How do I find a book if I know the call number?

Answer:

Call numbers are a method of keeping books in order and shelved by subject. At UO Libraries, we use the Library of Congress (LC) Classification system for most of our books and periodicals, which is an alphanumeric system which groups books by subject categories. You can usually find the call number on the lower spine of the item you are searching for, though occasionally they are located on the front cover.

At the Knight Library, call numbers are split by levels: A-GV are located on the 2nd floor; H-PL are located on the 3rd floor; and PL-Z can be found on the 4th floor. You can ask for a map of the library that illustrates this shelving scheme at the Checkout & Reserves desk. You can also access this map online: https://library.uoregon.edu/knight/knight-library-floor-maps. In addition, Library staff are always ready to help, so please never hesitate to ask for assistance.
